How much do they cost?

Price at the time of your order applies. Currently, $3000.00 US for orders placed after 4/22/2006, not including shipping or applicable tax.

5/6/07 My books are temporarily closed. I need to focus on completing the many orders I currently have before I can accept any new ones. for those with instruments on order, please feel free to contact me to inquire about any possible changes in estimated completion times.

The price of 30-button, anglo concertinas has jumped dramatically over the last few years. “Vintage” instruments have doubled or more in price over the last 10 years. Due to the increased interest in the instrument, the limited supply of good Wheatstones, Jeffries, and Crabbs have all but disappeared from the market, and if you can find one for sale, the prices are very inflated. New makers have stepped in to supply new instruments to meet the demand, but wait times are long, and prices for most of those instruments have also gone up. The market may be a boon to concertina makers, but it is increasingly difficult for a new player or someone wishing to move up from an accordion reeded instrument to afford one of the better concertinas.

My prices reflect a desire to keep really good instruments available at affordable prices. I don’t offer customization other than minor things to help fit an instrument to different players. Consequently, if someone changes their mind after placing an order I can simply shift to the next person on the list. All this helps to keep the cost down. I have geared my construction towards methods that produce identical parts more quickly, rather than “one off “ models that have to be custom fit in all aspects. This helps to keep the quality up and the cost down, but makes customization a bit more difficult.

My price is not a reflection of the quality of the instrument. I simply don’t feel the need to follow the market as it spirals out of control. Like a few other makers, I am in it for the love of the instrument, and want to see more of them out there. If you want a well made, great sounding and playing concertina, pay more only if you prefer the particular sound or look of an instrument. A Kensington will hold its own with the best.
